Community Engagement

Encounter - Tūtakitaki

Through our Encounter - Tūtakitaki programme, the CSO takes its performances out of the concert hall and into community spaces, entertaining young and old, and everyone in between.

Retirement Home Recitals

CSO musicians present house concerts in retirement homes whose residents are unable to access main-stage performances because of mobility or other health restrictions. An atmosphere of intimacy allows the residents, and especially those with hearing impairments, to get close to the music, and to meet the musicians.

Primary School Visits

Primary school students are introduced to the instruments of the orchestra in fun-filled, highly interactive presentations. For many students, this will be their first encounter with orchestral instruments and, we hope, will trigger a life-long love of music.

Music Trails

Ensembles of CSO musicians perform for pre-school audiences and their carers in libraries across Christchurch City and the Selwyn District. These high energy musical bombs comprise singing, dancing, and story-telling.

Relaxed Performances

These performances are particularly suitable for individuals or groups who feel more comfortable attending concerts in a relaxed environment. Everyone is welcome, including people with autism, sensory and communications impairments and learning disabilities.

  • A relaxed attitude to noise and movement during the concert - you are welcome to move around the space, clap, and make as much noise as you want!
  • Friendly staff on hand to help welcome you.
  • You can leave and re-enter at any point.

In 2021, relaxed performances are offered for:

  • Roald Dahl's Little Red Riding Hood
    Friday 16 July, 11am & 1pm
    Ron Ball Studio
