Zara Ballara

For almost three decades, Zara Ballara has inspired singers to discover authentic, confident and expressive voices. As a voice teacher at Te Kura Puoro | UC School of Music, University of Canterbury, she is committed to creating a learning environment where curiosity is nurtured, excellence is pursued with compassion, and every student is encouraged to realise their unique artistic potential.

Zara's career has spanned performance, teaching and research. Following postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, she enjoyed an international performing career that included a Wigmore Hall debut, winning the Maggie Teyte Prize, and performing the soprano solo in Haydn's The Creation under the baton of Sir Colin Davis. These experiences continue to inform her work with emerging singers, helping them develop technical freedom, artistic integrity and meaningful communication.

Her teaching pedagogy extends beyond vocal technique. Zara believes that singing has the power to transform lives. Singing can strengthen identity and deepen human connection. Whether working with young singers discovering their voices or experienced performers refining their artistry, she strives to cultivate resilience, imagination and a lifelong love of learning.

Zara is completing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Canterbury, where her research, Waiata Māori: Becoming an Indigenous Voice on the Classical Stage, explores how waiata Māori can create meaningful dialogue between Te Ao Māori and Western classical performance. Through autoethnography and Kaupapa Māori-informed research, her work reflects her own journey of reconnecting with her whakapapa and reimagining performance as an act of relationship, belonging and cultural responsibility.

Alongside her teaching and research, Zara serves as Co–Vice President of the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing (NEWZATS), contributing to the advancement of vocal pedagogy throughout Aotearoa.

Whether in the studio, on the concert platform or through her research, Zara is passionate about revealing potential, honouring every singer's unique story, and empowering others to find their own authentic voice through music.
